2025 Shillingstone Coronation Cup Presentation

Shillingstone Parish Council is delighted to announce that Anne Powell has been awarded the 2025 Coronation Cup. The ceremony took place on Wednesday evening during the Carols in The Pub event at the Old Ox Inn, and the award celebrates residents who go above and beyond for our community through quiet, unselfish actions.

This year saw a significant increase in engagement, with nine residents nominated for their outstanding community spirit. While every nominee represents the best of Shillingstone, three individuals received exceptional support during the election process.

2025 Award Recipients

Winner: Anne Powell (35% of the vote)

A pillar of the village for nearly 30 years, Anne was described by her peers as a "complete star". Her leadership has been instrumental in the £400,000 church re-roofing project, where she navigated complex grant applications and paperwork to ensure the landmark survives for another century. Beyond this massive voluntary undertaking, she serves as a School Governor, choir member, and bell ringer.

Runner-Up: Mark Pomeroy (22% of the vote)

Mark is recognized as an "unsung hero" who lead's by example without seeking the spotlight. His "hands-on" approach to village maintenance—specifically clearing streams and drains—has notably reduced flooding on the recreation ground along Hine Town Lane. Administratively, he has worked tirelessly on the Village Plan and coordinated with Dorset Highways to improve local safety.

Third Place: Shaun Hannam (13% of the vote)

As the Landlord of the Old Ox Inn, Shaun was commended for his resilience in keeping a vital community hub open despite the current economic pressures of rising energy bills and prices. He is a stalwart supporter of the Shillingstone Village football team, frequently hosting them and providing food after home games.

The Coronation Cup

The Coronation Cup is Shillingstone’s community award, presented annually to recognise the achievements of people who regularly volunteer and selflessly work behind the scenes to improve and enhance the lives of others in our village.

If you know of a worthy individual, be they someone in voluntary service, maybe they represent a village organisation, the Church, a charity worker, a teacher or assistant, a caregiver, a council worker, a postal worker, a shop worker, etc. then why not put their name forward for much-deserved recognition by our community?

An award has been presented annually by the Parish Council since 1978 to recognise the contribution made by member(s) of the community to village life and was initially named the 'Baldock Cup', however in 2001 the decision was made to rename it to the 'Jubilee' cup. With the sad death of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022 it was agreed to retire the Jubilee Cup and introduce a new version of the award to recognise the investiture of the new King, Charles III onto the throne. We commissioned a brand new Cup handcrafted out of Acacia wood by one of our own talented craftsman in the village, Alan Long, who very kindly donated it to Shillingstone Village.

To be eligible to win the cup you must be:

  1. A resident of Shillingstone
  2. Not have won the award in the proceeding 5 years
  3. Must be nominated by a resident of Shillingstone who is aged over 16 years
  4. The award is for actions undertaken since 1st January through to the closing date; consideration will be made for actions undertaken after the date the cup was last awarded.
  5. Nominations must be received before midnight on the closing date identified below.
  6. A proposer can only vote once. i.e. one person one vote.
N.B. Any suspected duplicates will all be removed from the count.
  7. Each eligible voter in your household, based on the criteria above, can cast a vote.
  8. Please remember to set out the main reasons why you think the nominee deserves the award,i.e. voluntary action/contribution to our village community.

N.B. It is important that you give as much detail as possible about what your nominee(s) achieved in order to make them stand out.

All eligible nominations will be put forward together with the number of nominations received for any given nominee to identify the winner of the award.
